SONG CYCLE : vive la vélorution! is the latest in a highly popular series of large-scale choral works with jazz quintet by world-renowned British composer Alexander L'Estrange. Zimbe! Come sing the songs of Africa! was the first of these, with Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose continuing the success story. Like Zimbe and Ahoy, this new work has a part for Unison Children's Choir (optional) that works alongside the SATB choir and jazz quintet.
Song Cycle was commissioned to mark the grand départ of the Tour de France in Yorkshire in 2014. The ten entertaining songs, comprising eight originals and two arrangements, tell the story of the bicycle from its inauspicious beginnings to the glorious Tour de France.
The World Premiere took place at York Minster on June 28th 2014 with over 400 singers from across Yorkshire and the composer's own 'Call Me Al' Jazz Quintet coming together to perform this fabulous new choral work.
